Although cannabis and hemp have been used for millennia, modern science has only delved into a fraction of all the properties and compounds inside the plant.

What is cannabinodiol?

CBND, known formally as Cannabinodiol, is a cannabinoid naturally found in both hemp and cannabis plants.

This compound is relatively new to the market and the cannabinoid community in general. It was first discovered in 1972 by scientists who isolated it from hashish, and at that time it was identified by GC-MS cannabinodiol.

Later though, this research was proven incorrect when cannabidiol was synthesized again, and researchers found that the actual compound in the first study was CNBD-C5. This resulted in a new name in 1977, which also concluded that CNBD is the photochemical conversion of cannabinol or CBD. 

As a simplified version of this, CBND’s relationship to CBD is similar to how CBN forms from THC. When Delta-9 THC breaks down naturally in the cannabis plant, it turns into CBN. In the hemp community, it is also what gives “old weed” the “sleepy feeling”.

Well, similar to that, CBND is the result of the photochemical breakdown or conversion of CBD. Aside from that, research and more information are needed to understand how CBND works fully.

With that said, let’s get into the things we do know. Because of the lack of information about this cannabinoid, some people report it is non-psychoactive. Scientific research reports that this compound does have minor psychoactive components, pretty similar to how CBN works.

Like many other minor cannabinoids in the hemp plant, CBND can be found naturally in minor quantities in the plant. Besides that, it is believed that this cannabinoid may actually not bind to the endocannabinoid receptors.

How does CBND Work?

Before we move on, you must know that CBND is an aromatized version of CBD. This turns CBD’s structure into an aromatic ring, which has 3 double bonds and basically changes its chemical foundation.

Now, this cannabinoid might have the potential of both CBD and CBN. This potential offspring of CBD and CBN is believed to not have direct interaction with the CB1 and CB2 receptors, but rather stimulate the human body’s production of its own cannabinoids.

Other cannabinoids that work around the proteins in the endocannabinoid receptors are CBD, CBN, CBG, and CBC. And much like CBND, CBN has slight psychoactive components, but these are pretty minor when compared to other cannabinoids like Delta-9 THC or HHC.

Is CBND legal?

Much like other hemp-derived cannabinoids, CBND is legal by federal law as long as it is extracted from hemp. CBND is not found in significant quantities in the hemp plant, meaning it is mostly produced from hemp-derived CBD.

This process transforms Cannabidiol into CBND through aromatization. This changes CBD’s chemical structure into CBND. However, as long as it follows the hemp-derived substance guidelines from the 2018 Farm Bill, it is legal federally.

The main restriction on this act is determining what hemp is. As long as the product contains less than 0.3% of Delta-9 THC based on its weight, the product is classified as hemp and can be produced, manufactured, and consumed freely in most states.

Potential benefits of CBND

Very little is known about this cannabinoid, so the benefits are pretty much based on the scientific research available. However, there are some therapeutic benefits to supporting specific neuropsychiatric symptoms.

Thanks to how it works around the endocannabinoid system, instead of binding to the proteins, this cannabinoid could also hold some of the potential benefits of both CBD and CBN. But far more research needs to be conducted. 

Therapeutic benefits of CBND

According to this compound’s pharmacology, it can hold the potential for the treatment of nausea, sleep-wake disorders, and even managing pain for multiple sclerosis.

Scientific research has also opened the debate that this cannabinoid could have potential medical effects. Some of the possible effects of this compound along with other cannabinoids are its analgesic, antiemetic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-epileptic properties.
