If there’s one thing that keeps the joy alive in using cannabis, it’s the dizzying number of options you have in choosing just how you want to consume everyone’s favorite herb. Smoking tops the list for most people – but there are so many choices within that, too, from pipes and bongs to one-hitters, joints, and self-rolled as well as pre-rolled joints. One daring method that is still catching up in terms of popularity is the cannagar. Fans of the concept promote it as the end-all, be-all DIY solution that is going to revolutionize weed for everyone. But what exactly is a cannagar, anyway? Let’s take a closer look.

What is a Cannagar?

In simple terms, a cannagar is a 100% cannabis-based cigar. Imagine your average blunt. Now take away the wrapping paper and replace it with a self-made design consisting entirely of cannabis leaves. There you have your cannagar – more or less at least. The idea is that the leaves used to make the outer shell of the cannagar are specially treated with kief and potent hash oil before wrapping. That way, the “paper” of your cannagar actually contributes to the intensity of your hit. Wrapping the contents of the cannagar tightly with actual hemp leaves also has a secondary benefit. Compared to a traditional blunt, which is almost always only rolled or loosely wrapped due to the fragility of traditional cigar paper, cannabis leaves offer a lot more flexibility. This way, a cannagar can be constructed with a very tight fit to secure high-potency concentrates and prevent spilling. This is really great for smoking moon rocks, charas, or other highly-concentrated and purified forms of weed. However, being one of the most potent cannabis products around, you can expect cannagars to be both rare and extremely expensive should you find one pre-rolled at your local dispensary. Fortunately, making one yourself isn’t all that hard, and we will go over how to do so further down below in this guide.

What is a Cannagar Used for?

A cannagar is used in exactly the same way as a traditional blunt or joint. You light it up, take a hit, exhale, rinse, and repeat. Okay, maybe you could do without rinsing, but you get the idea. The reason to choose a cannagar over something simpler and more convenient like a pre-roll joint is the ability to jam-pack it with much more highly concentrated cannabis. Not only do the leaves wrapped around the outside of the cannagar contribute to the potency of the mix (especially when properly coated in some kief and/or oil extract), but the tight and secure form of the cannagar also allows you to fill it with much more potent forms of weed than hand-ground nugs. Another key benefit is that cannagars can burn for a long time. This is already true of most blunts, but cannagars take it up a notch by burning more smoothly and thus lasting even longer on average. You can expect a cannagar to still be going well past an hour after you first lit it up. So, in other words: a cannagar will burn harder, longer, and sweep you off your feet way faster than any kind of joint or blunt you could ever come up with. That is what all the hype is about.

How to Make a Cannagar

So how do you make a cannagar by yourself? It might be a bit more involved than what you’re used to, but don’t worry: the process isn’t that hard to learn! Basically, what you need to do is gather some small, fresh nugs and poke them with something thin and reasonably pointy, like a pair of toothpicks. Using the toothpicks, skewer the cannabis and group it together until it forms clumps. Now here’s the hard part: you need to do this while also making sure that the toothpicks leave behind open holes for airflow. Without these, the cannagar won’t be able to burn. Simple? Yes. Easy to master in one try? Definitely not. This is why there exists a second method for making a cannagar that depends on something called a cannagar mold. Using a mold simplifies the process a lot, and pre-made molds are much more affordable than a pre-rolled cannagar – but there’s still a way to go DIY and create everything you need yourself. Let’s see how! https://www.youtube.com/embed/xbsxTMBfYew

Materials Needed for a Cannagar

The following covers everything you need in order to make a good first cannagar all by yourself without relying on any pre-made or pre-rolled ingredients:
  • Some fresh nugs from your choice of cannabis flower – about 10 to 12 grams should be enough
  • Some concentrate to spice things up! This can be pure hash oil or something like small clumps of charas or shatter
  • A relatively sharp, long stick, such as a large toothpick
  • A roll of hemp rope
  • Fresh cannabis leaves or hemp paper
That’s it! If you can gather the above, you’re ready to try making your first DIY cannagar! If you don’t have any fresh weed on hand and need some inspiration, how about Fruit Loops? One of our favorite Indica hybrids, this kushy, sweet-sour strain will send you flying with its high-potency effects. Its high resin and terpene content makes it a good choice as a mold for a cannagar. At Botany Farms, we offer a unique high-CBD blend of the strain – perfect for beginners and those who don’t take well to the extreme THC content sometimes found in cannagars. Similarly, you could try making your own cannagar with some Delta-8 Bubba Kush. A real Indica classic, now redefined with lots and lots of Delta-8, Bubba Kush packs a punch and will leave you with a really fuel-heavy, skunky exhale.

How to Make a Cannagar Mold

The first, and arguably the hardest step in making a cannagar yourself is preparing the mold. You’ll first need to grind your cannabis – again, make sure it is still fresh, as dry weed doesn’t stick so well. If your choice of flower is a particularly resinous strain that feels oily to the touch, that’s even better. Next, take your skewer and coat it to make sure it’ll stick to the cannabis. You can use some of the hash oil or concentrate if you want, but you can also lather the stick with some water and sugar for a similar effect. Now, take the skewer and gather up as much raw cannabis with it as you can. Clump it together, roll it up into a cylinder, and really make sure it’s sticking to the skewer. When you’re happy with the rough form and size, take your hemp rope and tie it securely but not too tightly around the cannabis. This is going to set in stone the dimensions of your mold. Once tied up and secured, wrap the mold in some parchment paper and put it in the fridge for at least one day so it solidifies. That’s it!

How to Roll a Cannagar

So how do you make a full-blown cannagar using the method we just described? If you can get the hang of making the mold, it’s actually far easier than you might expect. Practice the skewering, gathering up the cannabis, and tying up for starters. This can help you learn how to create cannagars that are consistent in size, shape, and ultimately, potency. Once you have something you’re happy with, and after following the instructions above on how to make your mold, take it out of the fridge. If it looks solid enough, you can carefully remove the hemp rope now. Now you can grab your mold by the skewer and liberally apply your choice of concentrate. If it’s a liquid, like hash oil, feel free to just dip the whole mold in there. If it’s solid, like wax, then applying some heat with a lighter will probably make things easier. Once you’re satisfied with the amount of concentrate, wrap things up (literally) using your cannabis leaves. Not that you should cut off any trace of the stems before using the leaves! Also try to make sure that none of the leaves you’re using are too dry. If they are, they could crack, risking spills or preventing the cannagar from burning as it should. Roll your mold in the leaves by wrapping the leaves not straight, but diagonally – picture the pattern of a classic candy cone. If you’re using hemp paper, you can just roll in the same way as you would any kind of blunt. Now, your cannagar is almost ready! It needs to be stored again to really gain its final shape, so carefully wrap it once more with your piece of hemp rope and either leave it in the fridge for a few days or in a cool, dark and moderately humid place somewhere around the house for at least a week. When ready, take out your cannagar, apply one final coating of concentrate to the outside, and leave it still wrapped in an airtight jar for a week or so to dry and cure. After that, you can feel free to take it out, remove the hemp rope and the skewer, and light it up! A well-made cannagar should be able to last anywhere from one to five hours or more – so plan ahead to make sure it’s used on a deserving occasion. And for those days when you just can’t muster up the effort to commit to the lengthy, tricky, and sometimes frustrating process of making the perfect cannagar, why not try a nice pre-roll? We just released our brand-new White CBG Pre-Roll, offering relaxing cerebral effects courtesy of one of the most underappreciated cannabinoids on the market! A flowery-sweet taste and vanilla-like aroma ensure that the experience is every bit as pleasant as a nice afternoon dessert.
