Out of all of the most popular contemporary weed strains, there are few that have a true heritage such as the universally beloved Gorilla Glue.

Gorilla Glue is more than a strain; in fact, it’s a whole family of mutually related Indica hybrid breeds sharing the same vibe, unique effects, and characteristics. All Gorilla Glue strains are characterized by a bitingly sharp high that paralyzes your body and glues you to the nearest couch or bed with the weight of an anvil bearing on your shoulders—hence the name.

Among the most popular therapeutic strains, they are incredibly beneficial for pain and anxiety. But what exactly differentiates all the different strains within the Gorilla Glue family? What makes each of them unique? And which is ultimately best for you? Read on below to find out!

Gorilla Glue Strain Lineage

Gorilla Glue might be a legendary name in the world of weed strains now, but like any other strain, it was grown through the efforts of an incredibly talented and lucky breeder, a guy known to us nowadays as Josey Wales.

Josey was trying to create a new hybrid based on a triple cocktail of Sour Dubb, Chocolate Diesel, and Chem’s Sister. While potent, the results initially fell short of his expectations, and he didn’t find a way to rectify the intense stickiness of those resinous buds. Some say that this is where the “Glue” moniker originally derived from.

In any case, Josey Wales grew frustrated with the initial results of his breed and attempted to discard all the seeds. Fortunately for us, a friend discovered and planted some of the leftovers for himself. This led to the development of a series of Gorilla Glue phenotypes, and #4 was the first to be released to the public. This is what is nowadays considered the “original” Gorilla Glue.

Interestingly, despite initially abandoning the formula, Josey Wales decided to return to it later when he saw the strain’s popularity picking up. Together with his friend, he founded GG Strains LLC, which produces and has patented the formula that makes Gorilla Glue. This makes Gorilla Glue one of the very few weed strains in the world that is not just legally defined but protected.

Gorilla Glue Strain THC/CBD Content

All Gorilla Glue strains are high in THC, ranging from levels in the high teens up to 30% or even beyond. This makes them excellent for medical use while also providing that insanely sharp, characteristic “glue” high.

As you would expect with numbers like that, CBD levels tend to be much more restrained across Gorilla Glue strains. Sub-single-digit numbers are all you can bargain for, though thanks to the super-high concentration of THC, that really doesn’t imply any loss in potency whatsoever.

Gorilla Glue Strain Terpenes

The terpene profile of each Gorilla Glue strain is unique; that is what gives each of them its own character. However, there are some overarching trends that unify the whole family and somewhat bring them closer together.

All Gorilla Glue strains feature plenty of myrcene, providing a dark, somewhat earthy taste with strong hints of fuel and diesel. They also tend to be quite rich in caryophyllene, which adds a certain degree of spice to the exhale.

Gorilla Glue Appearance

Most Gorilla Glue strains share the characteristic “family look”: lime-colored, clumpy buds covered in an extremely thick coat of crystalline trichomes that secrete significant amounts of sticky resin to the touch.

Gorilla Glue Strain Effects

Despite its enticing qualities, none of Gorilla Glue’s reputation today would exist if it weren’t for its trademark effects. Courtesy of the high THC count and unique terpene profile, Gorilla Glue is capable of delivering an absolutely earth-shattering high that has been known to glue unsuspecting beginners in place for hours upon hours.

Among the most intense indicas, Gorilla Glue absolutely sedates the body while sending the mind flying off sky-high. Pain washes off almost instantly, as does any semblance of anxiety, worry, or mental cloudiness. Among the most intense experiences you can have with an Indica hybrid strain, Gorilla Glue opens you up and shuts you down at the same time.

Gorilla Glue Strain Flavors

Again, not all Gorilla Glue strains will fit the following description perfectly, but do note that every member of the family does share some resemblance to these general traits. Thanks to its terpene makeup, Gorilla Glue tends to be a fairly fuel-heavy, gassy strain, especially on the exhale.

Some users may find shades of chocolate or coffee; others will more easily notice hints of sour fruit peeking through. Overall, this is an enjoyable strain with classic notes all over its taste spectrum that are sure to please enthusiasts and newcomers alike.

Gorilla Glue Strain Aroma

With layers upon layers of wood, fresh earth, and spice, Gorilla Glue’s aroma is nothing if not inviting. Rougher perhaps than its effects, GG’s olfactory notes reek predominantly of organic textures. Each member of the Gorilla Glue family follows this pattern, though they do manage to put their own spin on the formula.

Gorilla Glue Strain Growing Info

Part of the appeal of the Gorilla Glue family is that they are not particularly challenging strains to grow. With an average flowering period of 9 to 10 weeks and small to average yields.

By no means a top performer, any Gorilla Glue strain is still very easy to care for and forgiving for beginners. Despite such strong Indica influences, GG strains like to grow tall, especially outdoors, so factor that into your plans and be prepared to trim the tops if necessary.

Gorilla Glue Strain Benefits

Besides being among the most potent recreational strains around, Gorilla Glue’s other claim to fame lies in its highly beneficial medicinal properties. Due to GG’s very high levels of THC, the strain packs a powerful relaxing punch that can quickly and very effectively wash away chronic pain and physical discomfort.

Those suffering from depression, anxiety, or other mood disorders will also find plenty to love about Gorilla Glue. Few indica-dominant hybrids can really clear the head as well as this one, and its overall mental health benefits are excellent. So rest assured, you will be feeling much more at ease after a few hits of Gorilla Glue!

Which Gorilla Glue Strain Is The Strongest?

Between all the Gorilla Glue strains, you have a wide selection to choose from. Each of these variants is going to please a different kind of user, but for a large segment of the community, the deciding question will always be: Which is the strongest?

Thankfully, this is a lot easier to answer than it would be with different families of strains. As mentioned previously, the formula for Gorilla Glue is protected by GG Strains, and as such, they have strictly defined the characteristics of each of their strains to prevent copycats and to ensure an evenly balanced supply.

According to GG Strains, the most potent of the bunch is Gorilla Glue #5. Also known as New Glue, this strain came about from attempts to refine the original #4, making it much more powerful.

THC levels vary from plant to plant but generally hover in the range of 25–30%+. This makes #5 a strain that is definitely not for the faint of heart; even for those with a high THC tolerance, the experience can be overwhelming.

What is the Best Gorilla Glue Strain?

What users look for in their favorite strains is not always straightforward. It would be simplistic to boil it down to potency alone, which, while certainly important to many users, isn't the deciding factor for everyone.

In the end, most strains are more than the sum of their parts, and that includes excellent examples like the Gorilla Glue family. So, the only way to really know which one is right for you is to spend a little bit of time assessing the traits of each and familiarizing yourself with their unique character.

This way, by getting a real feel for what makes each Gorilla Glue strain so unique, you can come much closer to making an informed decision as to which is right for you. With that in mind, let’s do just that and thoroughly examine each member of the GG family.

Gorilla Glue #4 aka Original Glue

Let’s begin this roundup by looking at the one that started it all: Original Glue, also known as #4. A near-perfect hybrid with more pronounced Indica characteristics, #4 is known for its chocolate-like taste and long-lasting euphoric highs.

Incredibly sticky and resinous, Gorilla Glue #4 makes for the ultimate de-stressor and anxiety treatment due to its heavyweight cerebral effects that’ll leave you completely immobile for hours on end. The aroma ranges from fresh pine to dark, sour earth and is really captivating up close.

Compared to other GG strains, Original Glue features slightly lighter, smaller nugs with amber hairs. The flavor is also a lot more aggressively spicy compared to some others. Note that despite not being officially the most powerful of all GG strains, #4 can still pack quite a punch, with THC levels close to 30% in nearly all of our samples.

Gorilla Glue #5 aka New Glue

New Glue, or #5 if you prefer, was the first major revision of the formula that put Gorilla Glue on the map. It was achieved by crossing #4 with #1 (which we are going to take a look at further down below), resulting in a distinctly new and fresh experience.

More potent than the original and exhibiting classic, Kush-like Indica characteristics, #5 is a good choice if you found the slow, sedating nature of #4 either too overbearing or not active enough.

While the physical stimulation you get from New Glue is still somewhat similar, it’s the presentation that’s different. Instead of growing at a steady pace and maintaining its peak for hours, New Glue's high pounces on you when you least expect it, gripping you tightly and sending you down a rollercoaster of euphoria while your nerves blank out.

Gorilla Glue #1 aka Sister Glue

Sister Glue isn’t called #1 for no reason; not only is it among the most potent of all the GG strains, but it is also based on one of the first batches of seeds that was eventually made into what we now know and love as #4 Gorilla Glue.

Since the two share the same parent strains, #1 and #4 perform more similarly to each other than #5 does to either of them. However, Sister Glue is notably less potent and more physically sedating than almost any other Gorilla Glue phenotype.

The weight of Sister Glue’s high can really hardly be overstated; it is one of the most body-heavy experiences you can possibly have. If you’re looking for a strain that’s going to absolutely knock you out but don’t want the mental fireworks that more potent GG strains share, then #1 could be just right for you.

Gorilla Glue Auto

As you might guess from the name, Gorilla Glue Auto is a special auto-flowering breed of GG #4. Intended mainly to make life easier for growers by providing much more consistent and predictable flowering periods, Gorilla Glue Auto has a few tricks up its sleeve to distinguish it from the other members of the family.

With thicker, even denser buds, higher yields, and a more herbal aroma with spicier loads of pine seeping through, GG Auto is in many ways a more colorful revision of #4.

While the two are neck and neck effects-wise, Gorilla Glue Auto still manages to surprise with its own slightly different mix of Sativa and Indica-like traits. Overall, expect a very similar euphoric-relaxant strain with cerebral spice.

Auto Glueberry OG

Grown by Dutch Passion, Auto Glueberry OG is an exciting twist on the Gorilla Glue formula.

Blending the original #4 with some heavy-hitting OG Kush and dropping in the sweet flavor of Auto Blueberry, this is an easy-growing plant with sky-high THC levels and a refreshing flavor spectrum that gels surprisingly well with its effects.

Speaking of which, Auto Glueberry OG acts a lot more sativa-like compared to its parents. How you weigh this ultimately comes down to personal preference.

While it may not offer the same kind of knockout-blow body high that you can get from #4 or #5, Auto Glueberry does allow you to stay physically active and engage with others socially even while you’re spacing out from the euphoria the strain throws at you.

Purple Glue

Another popular unofficial spin on the example set by GG #4, Purple Glue is a highly pleasant strain to smoke, with a very distinct feel to it that sets it apart from the rest of the pack.

With higher-than-usual CBD levels of over 1%, even climbing past 2% in some samples, and more restrained THC concentrations of about 18-28%, Purple Glue is definitely not the range-topping, mind-blowingly potent strain that #4 was. Still, even with those numbers, it remains a powerful performer that demands a high tolerance.

What’s equally impressive are Purple Glue’s therapeutic benefits. Emblematic of other strains in the Gorilla Glue family, Purple Glue just about melts away any form of pain, tension, or dysregulation in the body. And it does so while enveloping you in an entirely new flavor experience—hints of skunky chemicals, fresh plums, and berries.

Gluechee

An official GG strains creation, Gluechee was achieved through a cross of Gorilla Glue #4 with Cheese. If you already enjoy your Original Glue but would like something with a punchier, livelier flavor profile, this is it.

You get the same ultra-high-THC cocktail of debilitating effects as with the original, but this time coupled with funky cheese and gas notes that complement the experience immensely well.

Gorilla Bomb

A Sativa hybrid, Gorilla Bomb derives from a blend of GG #4 with the uber-potent and aptly named THC Bomb, creating a strain that just about does the impossible and hits even harder than either of its parents alone.

An excellent candidate for a serious, regular-use medical strain, Gorilla Bomb is one of the most potent we have ever tried when it comes to relief from pain, cramping, soreness, and fatigue. Thanks to its elevated levels of mental stimulation, it’s also viable as an insomnia treatment.

With more colorful buds than #4 that radiate accents of bright orange, lime, and yellow, Gorilla Bomb is not just more exciting to look at; it also “pops” much more in the mouth, courtesy of a stronger, spicier, and slightly sweeter flavor that is more herbal and earthy. Those who preferred the gassy, diesel-like nature of the original GG exhale will not be entirely left wanting, though it is relegated to the background with Gorilla Bomb.

White Gorilla Glue Strain

White Fire Alien crossed with GG #4 gets you White Gorilla Glue, a high-THC powerhouse of a weed strain that combines Sativa-like mental stimulation and euphoria with the physical knockout blow you’d get from a bud of fresh #4.

Like Gorilla Bomb, this strain’s buds are distinctly lighter, fluffier, and somewhat larger than #4’s, with a sweeter flavor including some tropical flourishes. However, the hash taste and chocolate-like gassy notes that you will recognize from Original Glue are still very prominent.

Platinum Gorilla Glue

Another variation based on GG #4, this time crossed with the beloved Platinum Kush, Platinum Gorilla Glue is a great choice if you’re looking for an evening-friendly strain similar to the original that is even more relaxing, with subtler mental stimulation and slightly toned-down THC levels.

More accessible and a focused follow-up to #4, Platinum GG is also more indica-like, with kushier effects and a high that hits you, not unlike that of some high-grade Bubba strains.

With a summery, tropical flavor profile that even shows hints of citrus, it is also much lighter on the palate. You won’t find too many fuel-coated, sour vibes on the exhale here.

Super Gorilla Glue

Where Platinum Gorilla Glue makes the GG formula more interesting by adding some traditional kush spice to it, Super Gorilla Glue does nearly the opposite, turning the strain into more of a classic Sativa.

More liberating and subtle in its effects than other GG varieties, Super Gorilla Glue allows you to stay on your feet, keep socializing, and let your creativity and energy run wild as the near-30 percent THC takes over you completely. Unlike “pure” Gorilla Glue, Super GG won’t confine you to the couch, but that doesn’t mean that this extremely potent, high-THC strain is any more beginner-friendly either!

If you are a fan of the existing family of Gorilla Glue strains but aren’t yet comfortable with those THC numbers, we get you. Building up your tolerance, especially as a new user, can often take a long time, and you should never compromise your safety by rushing or forcing the process.

That is one of the reasons we love the Sour Space Candy line of easygoing yet potent marijuana strains. With sativa-like euphoric highs that blast your mood sky-high without being overwhelming, SSC strains offer the perfect balance of high potency and high accessibility.

At Botany Farms, we have reinvented the whole SSC family by offering new high-CBD breeds of all three strains—perfect for beginners—without sacrificing any of the medicinal properties that made the originals so great!

The original Sour Space Candy remains a classic among staple weed strains, and for good reason. Balancing both traits of Sativas and Indicas with a THC concentration in the low to mid-20s, Sour Space Candy is an upbeat, daytime-friendly strain that’s itching to take you on a joyride full of euphoric action and stimulation.

Both sweet, fruity, and namesake sour flavors dominate, making this both suitable for diesel lovers and those looking for something refreshing.

If you want something with the same kind of character but packing a bit more oomph, then there’s no replacement for Super Sour Space Candy. More potent in every way but just as well-rounded, Super SSC is made for more advanced users looking for something more challenging.

With a harsher, more fuel-inspired flavor, it should serve as a great springboard for those who are looking to give even stronger strains like Gorilla Glue a try in the near future.

Finally, there is the trailblazer, the black sheep of the family. Some may hate it, others love it, but nobody can deny that Delta-8 Sour Space Candy offers a completely unique experience that can’t be matched by any other strain.

With the relaxing and stimulating power that only Delta-8 can muster, combined with the 50/50 balanced hybrid characteristics of SSC, what you get is a strain that grips you and never lets go—not for at least a couple of hours, that is. If you’re starting to feel like you need to experiment a little, this might be just the right thing for you.
